Chandigarh: Renault Group has made a decisive move to bolster its global presence by deepening its investment in India, the world’s third-largest and one of the fastest-growing automotive markets. The company announced it has acquired the remaining 51% stake in the Chennai plant—previously held by Nissan—making Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) a wholly owned subsidiary of Renault Group.

This strategic acquisition signals Renault’s commitment to making India a central hub for its international operations under its International Game Plan 2027, and comes alongside the announcement of Stéphane Deblaise as the new CEO of Renault Group India, effective September 1, 2025.

🇮🇳 India: A Pivotal Market in Renault’s Global Strategy

With a robust supplier ecosystem, growing domestic demand, and strong industrial capabilities, India is emerging as a vital pillar in Renault Group’s global growth strategy.

  • India’s automotive sector grew 7% in 2024 and is projected to expand another 3.5% in 2025, reinforcing its status as a dynamic and promising market.

  • More than 50% of India’s population is under 28, offering significant long-term demand potential for passenger vehicles.

  • Renault’s Chennai plant has produced over 2.8 million vehicles and 4.6 million powertrains since its inception in 2010.

🏭 Renault Now in Full Control of Chennai Manufacturing Operations

By acquiring Nissan’s stake, Renault takes full command of the RNAIPL facility, which will now be consolidated into Renault Group’s financials. This move follows Renault’s earlier announcement in April 2025 of its largest design center outside France in India — a signal of long-term commitment to design and engineering rooted in the subcontinent.

Chennai plant capabilities:

  • Annual production capacity: 400,000+ vehicles

  • Products exported to 100+ countries

  • Backed by a network of nearly 300 local suppliers

  • Currently operates on CMF-A and CMF-A+ platforms

  • Preparing to roll out a new ultra-flexible, multi-energy modular platform

While now fully owned by Renault, the plant will continue producing Nissan models under the existing cooperation framework.

🚗 Product Offensive: Four New Models Incoming

Renault aims to launch four new models in India as part of its global strategy. The campaign starts with the New Renault Triber, designed to appeal to Indian families and young buyers alike.

These new vehicles will be:

  • Built for Indian and global markets

  • Developed locally through Renault’s joint engineering center with Nissan

  • Supported by the new multi-energy platform, enabling flexibility across EVs, hybrids, and ICE models

👤 Leadership Transition: Stéphane Deblaise Appointed CEO, Renault Group India

To drive this next phase of expansion, Stéphane Deblaise will take over as CEO of Renault Group India. Known for his deep experience across Renault’s global value chain, Deblaise is tasked with scaling operations, boosting exports, and overseeing the successful rollout of new products.

François Provost, CEO of Renault Group, commented:

“India is a key market for Renault Group. With full ownership of our plant in Chennai, we now have all the means to accelerate in India. Stéphane Deblaise, with his strong international experience and deep knowledge across our entire value chain, is ideally positioned to design and implement our strategy in the region.”

  • Expand exports to Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia

  • Manufacture models customized for global and Indian preferences

  • Leverage economies of scale through local supplier integration
