New Delhi: In a significant step towards enhancing food processing infrastructure and strengthening India’s rural economy, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has sanctioned over 1.44 lakh projects under its various schemes till June 30, 2025. The initiatives fall under the Central Sector schemes—Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI), and the Centrally Sponsored Pradhan Mantri Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME).
These projects aim to increase agricultural value addition, minimize post-harvest losses, foster rural entrepreneurship, and promote job creation while boosting food security and export competitiveness.
Strengthening Infrastructure Across the Nation
Under PMKSY, MoFPI has approved 1,134 food processing projects, which include:
-
41 Mega Food Parks
-
395 Cold Chain Projects
These projects are spread across the country and are focused on increasing processing and preservation capacities, enhancing efficiency through new technologies, and enabling better market linkages for farmers.
Under the PMFME scheme, aimed at formalizing the vast network of unorganized micro food processors, 144,517 proposals have been approved. This scheme provides financial, technical, and business support to micro food entrepreneurs, many of whom are located in rural areas. It also encourages cluster-based approaches with a strong focus on One District One Product (ODOP).
The PLISFPI, launched in 2021-22 and active until 2026-27, focuses on supporting large-scale food manufacturing units and developing global Indian food brands. So far, 170 proposals have been approved under the scheme, with a total financial outlay of ₹10,900 crore.
Kushinagar Identified as Banana Cluster
A key highlight is the strategic focus on Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh, which has been designated a Banana Cluster under the Operation Greens component of PMKSY. Furthermore, Banana has been identified as the One District One Product (ODOP) for the district under the PMFME Scheme.
The Ministry has sanctioned 261 projects in Kushinagar alone under PMFME, aiming to enhance banana processing, preservation, packaging, and export capabilities. This is expected to significantly boost income for local banana farmers and generate employment in the region.
Focus on Reducing Losses and Increasing Farmer Incomes
The MoFPI schemes provide financial support in the form of grants-in-aid and subsidies for setting up food processing and preservation infrastructure. Facilities such as cold storages, temperature-controlled transport systems, frozen storage, controlled atmosphere storage, and irradiation units ensure faster movement of produce while reducing post-harvest losses and extending shelf life.
By increasing value addition to raw farm produce, farmers can realize higher prices for their crops, leading to improved rural incomes and enhanced economic activity in agrarian regions.
World Food India and Global Engagement
To further amplify investment in the Indian food processing sector, MoFPI has hosted three editions of World Food India (WFI) in 2017, 2023, and 2024. These global platforms have brought together food processors, agritech innovators, logistics players, equipment manufacturers, and policymakers from across the world.
The WFI events have helped showcase India’s investment potential, facilitate tie-ups between domestic and foreign companies, and promote the integration of Indian food products into global value chains.
Vision of Inclusive Growth
In his written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Shri Ravneet Singh, emphasized that MoFPI’s schemes align with the government’s vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). The goal is to empower farmers, encourage entrepreneurship, and establish India as a global leader in food processing and value-added agriculture.
The Ministry’s continued support and structured schemes are helping create a robust infrastructure for food processing, ensuring inclusive growth by targeting the grassroots—India’s rural heartland.
