Chandigarh: In a digital-first India, where smartphones and UPI transactions have become part of everyday life, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has released a set of five key safety tips aimed at reinforcing safe digital payment practices. With more than 15 billion UPI transactions taking place every month and an ever-expanding digital economy, NPCI’s awareness drive comes at a crucial time to protect users from fraud, phishing, and identity theft.
As digital adoption increases, so do the risks. Scammers and fraudsters continue to evolve, employing new tactics to deceive unsuspecting users. Recognizing this, the NPCI emphasizes that while digital payments offer speed, convenience, and empowerment, safety must remain a priority for every user. Even small, everyday habits can make a significant difference in preventing financial loss and preserving trust in the digital ecosystem.
Here Are NPCI’s 5 Key Tips for Safe Digital Payments:
1. Always Check Before You Pay
Before confirming any payment, always double-check the recipient’s name that appears on the app screen. Whether you’re sending money to a friend, family member, or merchant, it’s vital to ensure the identity is correct. A brief pause to verify can prevent sending funds to the wrong account.
2. Use Only Trusted Apps and Websites
Users are advised to make transactions only through official and reputed payment apps or websites. Avoid installing third-party apps from unknown sources or clicking on suspicious links. Fraudsters often circulate fake apps and phishing websites that mimic genuine platforms. Being cautious in app usage and downloads can serve as the first line of defense.
3. Never Share Your UPI PIN, OTP, or Bank Details
Sensitive information like UPI PINs, one-time passwords (OTPs), and account credentials should be treated as strictly confidential. NPCI warns that no bank, payment platform, government official, or police personnel will ever ask for these details. Sharing such information—even with someone claiming to be an authority figure—can lead to instant account compromise.
4. Do Not Rush Any Payment
Fraudsters often create a sense of urgency, pressuring users to act quickly. Whether it’s a fake prize, emergency request, or time-sensitive deal, NPCI encourages users to pause and verify before proceeding. It’s okay to say, “Let me check and call back.” Taking a moment to reflect can prevent hasty decisions and financial loss.
5. Enable Payment Alerts and Monitor Transactions
Turning on SMS and in-app notifications for all transactions is a smart practice. Regularly checking alerts allows users to quickly identify unauthorized activity. If any suspicious transaction is noticed, users should contact their bank or app provider immediately to report and mitigate the risk.
Reporting Suspicious Activity
In addition to the five core safety tips, the NPCI urges users to report suspicious behavior or financial fraud by:
-
Dialing the National Cybercrime Helpline: 1930
-
Reporting through the Department of Telecommunication’s platform at https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc
Users are also encouraged to save chat histories, take screenshots, and document any interactions with suspicious contacts. Such evidence can be valuable for cybercrime investigations and resolution.
Digital Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility
The push for secure digital payment habits comes as part of NPCI’s broader commitment to financial inclusion and digital empowerment. India’s rapid digital transformation has enabled people from all corners—urban and rural—to access banking services, pay bills, transfer money, and shop online with ease. But this progress also requires shared responsibility.
An NPCI spokesperson said, “Digital payments have revolutionized financial access in India. But it’s equally important for users to be digitally aware. A few simple steps, taken consistently, can go a long way in preventing fraud and ensuring a safe payment experience for everyone.”
A Nationwide Digital Movement
The NPCI is also collaborating with banks, fintech companies, digital influencers, and educators to spread awareness through workshops, campaigns, and in-app notifications. From school students to senior citizens, everyone is being encouraged to build digital hygiene.
With increased awareness and responsible use, India can continue to scale the heights of digital innovation without compromising user safety. Whether you’re a first-time UPI user or a seasoned online shopper, adopting these basic security practices ensures that you stay in control of your digital finances.
