Chandigarh: In a strong show of solidarity with the people of flood-affected Punjab, Members of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have announced that they will contribute significant portions of their Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) funds to support ongoing flood relief and rehabilitation works. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs of AAP are actively visiting affected districts, monitoring rescue operations, and extending immediate financial assistance.
The heavy monsoon rains and subsequent flooding in multiple districts of Punjab have caused large-scale damage to infrastructure, homes, and farmlands. In response, AAP MPs have stepped in with urgent funding allocations and on-ground interventions to accelerate relief efforts.
Malvinder Singh Kang Supports Strengthening of Sutlej Embankment
Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Singh Kang inspected the embankments of the Sutlej river at Bela Tajowal in Nawanshahr district, along with erosion-prone areas of Patiala Ki Rao in Mohali district. Recognizing the immediate need for preventive infrastructure, he released ₹20 lakh from his MPLADS funds to strengthen the Sutlej embankment at Bela Tajowal.
Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Sandeep Pathak Leads with ₹5 Crore Contribution
Rajya Sabha MP and AAP’s national general secretary (organization), Dr. Sandeep Pathak, visited the flood-affected regions of Ferozepur to review the situation first-hand. He announced a massive contribution of ₹5 crore from his MPLADS funds, marking one of the largest individual allocations for flood relief by a parliamentarian this year.
“Punjab is in pain, and it is our responsibility to stand shoulder to shoulder with our people in these difficult times. Every rupee from our MPLADS funds must now go towards relief, rehabilitation, and rebuilding,” Dr. Pathak said while interacting with affected families.
Raghav Chadha Allocates ₹3.60 Crore for Gurdaspur
Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha conducted an on-ground review of the devastation in Gurdaspur district. Acknowledging the urgent need for financial resources, he committed ₹3.60 crore from his MPLADS funds. He stressed that the funds will be utilized in coordination with local authorities to ensure maximum impact in rebuilding embankments, restoring basic amenities, and supporting displaced families.
Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and Harbhajan Singh Extend Relief Support
Veteran environmentalist and Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, who has been continuously engaged in relief operations in Kapurthala district, announced a grant of ₹50 lakh from his discretionary funds. In addition, he has released special helpline numbers to assist victims at a personal level, underscoring his hands-on approach in community outreach.
Meanwhile, former cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh earmarked ₹30 lakh for mobile water tankers and fogging machines, crucial to preventing the outbreak of waterborne diseases. He further released ₹17.32 lakh for procurement of boats — three for Ferozepur, two for Kapurthala, and one for Gurdaspur. Additionally, he announced four more boats for Jalandhar, highlighting the need for enhanced mobility in flood-hit areas.
Lok Sabha MPs Step In with Significant Allocations
Among Lok Sabha members, Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal, MP from Hoshiarpur, committed ₹50 lakh from his MPLADS funds, directing the amount towards strengthening embankments in vulnerable parts of his constituency.
Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, MP from Sangrur, has been personally engaged in relief efforts in the Ajnala area of Amritsar. He announced a ₹25 lakh allocation from his MPLADS funds to the Amritsar district administration for urgent relief and rehabilitation works.
Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal also joined the efforts with a ₹20 lakh contribution from his discretionary funds to Amritsar district, further augmenting the collective response.
MPLADS Funds: A Critical Resource in Disaster Response
The MPLADS scheme allows MPs to allocate funds for development works in their constituencies. In times of natural calamities, these funds become a vital resource for immediate relief and rehabilitation. The collective decision by AAP MPs to dedicate a significant portion of their funds underscores the urgency of the situation and the party’s commitment to public service.
Standing Shoulder to Shoulder with Punjab
From boats and embankments to mobile water facilities and helplines, AAP MPs are ensuring a mix of short-term relief measures and long-term infrastructural strengthening. The party leadership emphasized that these contributions are not symbolic gestures but practical interventions aimed at protecting lives and livelihoods.
With the scale of devastation still unfolding, experts say that such financial and logistical support from elected representatives is crucial in complementing the efforts of state and central governments.
Conclusion
The coordinated response of AAP parliamentarians to the Punjab floods highlights the importance of political accountability during natural disasters. Their decision to utilize MPLADS funds for flood relief not only brings much-needed financial aid but also sends a powerful message of solidarity to the people of Punjab.
As floodwaters continue to recede, the challenge of rehabilitation and reconstruction will require sustained efforts, and contributions like these will play a pivotal role in helping communities recover and rebuild stronger.
