New Delhi: Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL), one of the leading manufacturers of premium cars in the country, has announced a landmark achievement of 200,000 cumulative car exports from India. This milestone not only highlights Honda’s robust manufacturing capabilities but also reinforces the global acceptance and trust in Made-in-India Honda vehicles.
Growth Journey of Honda Exports from India
Honda’s export operations from India began on a modest scale with limited shipments to neighbouring markets. In the initial years, the company primarily targeted SAARC countries, South Africa, and SADC markets.
-
The first 50,000 export units were achieved gradually, catering largely to nearby geographies until 2021.
-
The next 50,000 units milestone was reached in just 2.5 years, with expansion into Left Hand Drive (LHD) markets including Mexico, Turkey, and the Middle East. This was led by the Honda City, one of the company’s best-selling sedans worldwide.
-
The latest 100,000 units were achieved in just two years, marking the fastest pace of growth yet. This acceleration was fueled by the success of the Honda Elevate (exported as WR-V in Japan), which has found significant demand in Japan, South America, and Caribbean nations.
Contribution of Key Models

At the heart of Honda’s export success are the Honda City and the Honda Elevate, which together contribute to 78% of the total export volume.
-
The Honda City, with its premium design, strong engine options, and global appeal, has been a consistent performer across multiple markets.
-
The Honda Elevate, a mid-size SUV that resonates with the global shift toward versatile, practical, and stylish SUVs, has emerged as a strong growth driver.
The remaining 22% of exports came from models like the Brio, Amaze, Jazz, BR-V, Mobilio, City e:HEV, Accord, and CR-V, showcasing Honda’s diversified portfolio that caters to a wide range of customer needs across different regions.
Global Footprint of HCIL Exports
Over the years, Honda Cars India has exported vehicles to 33 countries, strengthening India’s position as a global automobile manufacturing hub.
-
Japan emerged as the largest export market, accounting for 30% of HCIL’s total exports.
-
South Africa and SADC countries followed with a significant 26% share.
-
Mexico contributed 19%, while Turkey accounted for 16%.
-
The remaining 9% exports were distributed among the Middle East, SAARC nations, Caribbean, and South American markets.
This geographical spread demonstrates Honda’s strategy of diversification and the ability of Indian-manufactured cars to meet the quality and regulatory requirements of both developed and emerging economies.
Honda’s Commitment to Make in India
Speaking on the achievement, Mr. Kunal Behl, Vice President, Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India Ltd., said:
“Achieving 200,000 export units fills Honda Cars India with immense pride. This milestone underscores the global recognition of our India-made cars. It also reflects the dedication of our skilled teams and robust manufacturing capabilities. Exports are an integral part of HCIL’s business and revenue strategy, and we remain committed to strengthening this area going forward. We are dedicated to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, serving both our domestic market and global customers.”
Honda’s strategy is aligned with the Government of India’s Make in India vision, with HCIL actively contributing to both domestic market demand and global exports. This dual focus ensures steady production scales, improved economies of scale, and continuous upskilling of the local workforce.
India’s Manufacturing Prowess in Focus
The success of Honda’s export journey is also a testament to India’s growing stature as a reliable automotive manufacturing base. By maintaining world-class production standards and leveraging its skilled workforce, Honda Cars India has demonstrated that Indian plants can compete with global facilities in terms of quality, efficiency, and innovation.
The company’s growing export volume also adds value to the Indian automotive ecosystem, benefiting local suppliers, vendors, and logistics partners who play a crucial role in supporting these international operations.
Looking Ahead
Having achieved this major milestone, Honda Cars India is expected to continue leveraging its manufacturing plant in India as a strategic hub for exports. With the global automotive market witnessing increased demand for fuel-efficient, technologically advanced, and stylish vehicles, HCIL is well positioned to expand its global footprint further.
Industry experts believe that the Honda Elevate/WR-V’s global success story will drive HCIL’s next phase of export growth, especially in SUV-focused markets. Meanwhile, the Honda City remains a cornerstone model, consistently reinforcing brand trust in multiple regions.
Honda Cars India’s achievement of 200,000 cumulative exports is not just a corporate milestone—it is a symbol of India’s potential as a global automobile hub. By exporting to 33 countries and earning global recognition for its top models, HCIL has proven its ability to blend Japanese engineering excellence with Indian manufacturing strength.
With increasing global demand, growing domestic capabilities, and continued support for the government’s manufacturing initiatives, Honda Cars India looks set to accelerate its export journey, reinforcing its place as a key contributor to India’s automotive exports.
