A Step Toward Strengthening Consumer Rights, Sustainability, and the Circular Economy

New Delhi: Encouraging citizens to creatively participate in India’s evolving “Right to Repair” movement, the Department of Consumer Affairs has launched a Logo Design Competition on “Empowering Consumers through Repairability Index”, in collaboration with MyGov and the Chair on Consumer Law at National Law University Delhi.

This initiative seeks to crowdsource innovative logo designs from citizens across India to represent the country’s transition toward responsible consumption, repair culture, and a circular economy. The competition aims to build a stronger public connection with the mission to empower consumers, reduce e-waste, and promote sustainable lifestyles.

Visual Identity for Consumer Empowerment

The proposed logo will play a vital role in visually communicating the objectives of the Repairability Index Framework, a flagship effort of the Department of Consumer Affairs to enable consumers to make informed product choices.

The logo is expected to serve three main purposes:

  1. Visibly indicate a product’s Repairability Index rating.

  2. Symbolize the principles of the Right to Repair and the circular economy.

  3. Act as a certification mark that consumers can easily recognize and trust.

Officials said that the logo will become a “symbol of empowerment” — helping consumers identify how easily a product can be repaired, thereby encouraging sustainable purchasing decisions over frequent replacements.

From Awareness to Action: Building a Repair Culture

Earlier, the Department of Consumer Affairs developed the ‘Right to Repair through Repairability Index Framework’ to empower consumers and reduce e-waste. The framework provides transparent, standardized information that allows consumers to choose products that can be repaired easily and affordably, instead of being discarded.

The initiative is closely aligned with the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) movement, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which promotes mindful consumption and responsible production.

Initially, the Repairability Index will focus on five key sectors — farming equipment, mobile phones & tablets, consumer durables, automobiles, and automobile components. These sectors were chosen because of their high repair potential and large contribution to electronic and material waste.

Empowering Consumers and Strengthening the Circular Economy

Under the framework, products will be assessed based on six core parameters

  • Depth of disassembly,

  • Availability of repair information,

  • Availability of spare parts within reasonable timeframes,

  • Software updates,

  • Tools and fasteners used, and

  • Accessibility of repair mechanisms.

Manufacturers (OEMs) will self-declare Repairability Index scores based on standardized criteria. These scores will be displayed on product packaging, online listings, and QR codes, allowing consumers to easily compare products and make repair-friendly purchasing decisions.

By increasing transparency, the Repairability Index aims to reduce e-waste, extend product life cycles, and foster a circular economy — in which products, parts, and materials are reused or recycled efficiently rather than discarded.

Competition Details and Participation

The Logo Design Competition is open to all Indian citizens aged 16 years and above as of November 1, 2025. Participants are invited to submit original logo designs that creatively depict repairability, sustainability, and consumer empowerment.

Entries must include a concept note explaining the idea and relevance of the design to the theme. Submissions should be uploaded on the MyGov portal (Empowering Consumers through Repairability Index | MyGov.in) by November 30, 2025 (23:45 hrs IST).

The winning entry will receive a cash prize of ₹25,000, and the selected logo may be officially adopted as the emblem for India’s Repairability Index Framework.

The Department has invited designers, students, innovators, and citizens from all walks of life to participate in this “creative national endeavour” that reflects India’s growing commitment to sustainability and consumer rights.

Journey Toward the Right to Repair

The Department’s push for the Right to Repair began in July 2022, when a high-level committee was formed to develop a comprehensive national framework.

Since then, several key milestones have been achieved:

  • December 2022: Launch of the Right to Repair Portal India, providing a unified platform for consumers, manufacturers, and third-party repairers.

  • March 2024: Stakeholder consultations with companies across automobiles, electronics, consumer durables, and farming sectors.

  • July 2024: Meetings with automobile associations to promote open access to repair manuals and tools.

  • August 2024: A national workshop on “Right to Repair in the Mobile and Electronics Sector,” which laid the groundwork for establishing key parameters for the Repairability Index.

The Committee’s final report, submitted in May 2025, recommended that smartphones and tablets be the first product categories covered under the framework.

A Step Toward Sustainable and Mindful Consumption

By combining policy innovation, public participation, and creative design, this logo competition marks an important step in India’s effort to make repair, reuse, and recycle central to its consumer economy.

As the Department emphasized, the Repairability Index and its logo will not only empower consumers with the “right to repair” but also inspire industries to design for durability and sustainability — paving the way for a more resource-efficient, environmentally conscious India.
