New Delhi: The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has launched a global outreach initiative called the “Chalo India Global Diaspora Campaign”, aimed at turning members of the Indian diaspora into ambassadors of Incredible India. The campaign encourages them to inspire their non-Indian friends and acquaintances to visit India at least once every year.
As part of this outreach, the government has already issued 30 e-tourist visas under the initiative, which is being positioned as a grassroots-level campaign to boost inbound tourism with the support of Indian communities living abroad.
Objective of the Campaign
The main goal of the Chalo India campaign is to enhance India’s visibility as a global tourism destination, particularly in untapped or underrepresented global markets. The initiative is also focused on:
-
Showcasing India’s diverse tourism products, including lesser-known destinations
-
Promoting cultural heritage sites
-
Increasing India’s share in the global tourism market
Strategic Outreach & Promotion
The Ministry of Tourism is executing the campaign by collaborating with:
-
Indian Missions overseas
-
Travel trade stakeholders
-
State Governments and UT Administrations
This integrated approach is designed to amplify India’s presence in international tourism circuits, particularly by leveraging the trust and connection that diaspora communities have in their host countries.
The campaign aims to turn India’s global diaspora into cultural connectors and promoters of India’s unique experiences—from heritage trails and pilgrimage sites to wellness retreats, nature-based tourism, and regional cuisines.
Ministerial Statement
The information was shared in a written reply in the Lok Sabha by Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture. He stated that the Chalo India initiative forms part of a broader set of promotional activities targeted at source markets with high potential for tourist inflow to India.
He added that the Ministry has been actively engaging in tourism marketing efforts through events, digital promotions, roadshows, and collaborations with international travel partners.
Why It Matters
India is rich in cultural and natural diversity, but many of its treasures remain underexplored by global tourists. With this initiative, the government seeks to mobilize the 32-million-strong Indian diaspora as a soft-power force to open doors for international travelers to experience India’s richness firsthand.
