Chandigarh: In a bid to bolster rural sanitation and public health, ACC Sindri—part of the diversified Adani Group—along with the Adani Foundation, has launched a transformative hygiene initiative in Chhatatand Gram Panchayat of Baliapur block, Jharkhand. By constructing dedicated washing platforms near community ponds, the initiative is addressing longstanding issues related to water contamination and health hazards caused by open washing practices.
Historically, villagers washed clothes and utensils directly at pond edges, often leading to water pollution and an increased incidence of skin infections and waterborne diseases. The new washing platforms, built at three high-use locations in Chhatatand, Simatand, and Kushberia, are not only improving hygiene but also driving positive behavioural change.
Each platform is constructed using sturdy local materials and includes a proper drainage system to prevent wastewater from re-entering the pond. The initiative placed a strong emphasis on community participation, particularly involving women in the planning and design stages. As a result, the platforms are not only functional but also culturally accepted and widely used.
Local health workers have already observed a significant decline in cases of waterborne illnesses and skin-related ailments. Women, who are the primary users of the facilities, report reduced physical strain and cleaner working environments. In addition, children and adolescents are being sensitised about hygienic practices through awareness sessions, further embedding the culture of cleanliness into the fabric of village life.
“This effort is a clear example of how small-scale, community-based infrastructure can lead to measurable improvements in health and well-being,” said a spokesperson from ACC Sindri. “By aligning with the real needs of the rural population, we are proud to contribute toward a cleaner and healthier environment.”
The initiative reflects the Adani Foundation’s broader commitment to sustainable rural development and its focus on people-centric interventions. Through initiatives like this, the Foundation and ACC are demonstrating how targeted, thoughtful infrastructure can be a catalyst for social and health transformation in India’s villages.
