New Delhi: The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has extended heartfelt congratulations to two of India’s cooperative powerhouses, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (Amul) and the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), for their stellar performance on the global stage. Amul and IFFCO have secured the 1st and 2nd ranks, respectively, in the prestigious global ranking for cooperatives, bringing immense pride to the nation’s cooperative sector.

In a statement posted on X, the Prime Minister highlighted the significant role of the cooperative movement:

“Congratulations to Amul and IFFCO. India’s cooperative sector is vibrant and is also transforming several lives. Our Government is taking numerous steps to further encourage this sector in the times to come.”

🏆 Global Recognition for India’s Cooperative Model

This landmark achievement was announced in the ICA World Cooperative Monitor 2025 report, which is released by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) in partnership with the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises (EURICSE).

The ranking is based on the cooperatives’ performance relative to GDP per capita, a metric that effectively showcases the impact of cooperative enterprises in emerging economies like India. This criterion emphasizes how these organizations contribute to national economic growth and uplift communities.

  • Amul (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd.) has been ranked as the Number 1 cooperative globally. It is the largest food product marketing organization in India, operating through a vast three-tier cooperative structure that benefits over 3.6 million milk producers. Amul’s success is often cited as a prime example of the power of collective ownership, rural empowerment, and sustainable business practices.
  • IFFCO (Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited) has secured the Number 2 position worldwide. As one of the world’s largest fertilizer producers, IFFCO plays a crucial role in India’s agriculture sector, reaching over 50 million farmers through its extensive network of approximately 35,000 member cooperatives. IFFCO’s model focuses on empowering farmers with quality inputs and technological solutions.

📜 Government’s Commitment to the Cooperative Sector

The Prime Minister’s congratulatory message underscores the government’s recognition of the vital and transformative role played by cooperatives in the country. The government has taken several initiatives, especially since the formation of the Ministry of Cooperation in 2021, to strengthen this sector under the vision of ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation).

This global acknowledgment is seen as a major endorsement of India’s cooperative model, which champions inclusive growth, social equity, and self-reliance, particularly in rural and agricultural economies. The success of Amul and IFFCO reinforces the potential of cooperatives to be a global model for empowerment and sustainable development.
