Chandigarh: In a landmark decision to conserve and promote aquatic biodiversity, Punjab’s Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Minister S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian declared “Rohu” (Labeo Rohita) as the official State Fish of Punjab. This announcement was made today at the minister’s office, marking a significant step for the state’s fisheries sector.
Punjab’s fish farming sector is flourishing, with over 43,683 acres dedicated to aquaculture, producing around 2 lakh metric tonnes annually. Out of this, “Rohu” contributes 42,353 metric tonnes, constituting 21.18% of the state’s total fish production. This prized fish, known for its fusiform body and large cycloid scales, can grow up to 45 kg in natural environments, and is currently priced between Rs 160-200 per kg.
Minister Khudian emphasized that “Rohu” is not only economically valuable but also nutritionally rich, packed with proteins, vitamins A, B, D, and Omega-3 fatty acids. Its popularity extends beyond Punjab, being a delicacy enjoyed in several other states.
The minister also praised the Fisheries Department and stakeholders for their efforts in achieving growth in the fish farming sector, highlighting the importance of Indian Major Carps (IMCs) — “Rohu”, Catla, and Mrigal.
Principal Secretary Rahul Bhandari stated that the official recognition of “Rohu” would lead to focused policy measures aimed at increasing its population and scaling aquaculture production, thereby strengthening Punjab’s economy. He added that under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, 637 beneficiaries have been provided self-employment in fish farming, supported by a subsidy of Rs 30.63 crores under the PMMSY scheme. This initiative complements agricultural income and boosts the state’s overall economic growth.
Director Fisheries Gurpreet Singh and other senior officials were present to witness this momentous occasion.
