The Government of India has rolled out a comprehensive strategy to strengthen domestic manufacturing, boost exports, and integrate India more deeply into global supply chains. These initiatives combine policy incentives, infrastructure reforms, and grassroots-level interventions to create a robust export-driven economy.

🔹 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) Expanding Market Access

Expanding India’s market access through trade agreements has been a central focus. India recently signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the United Kingdom on 24th July 2025, marking a new chapter in bilateral trade relations. Simultaneously, negotiations for the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (EU-FTA) are underway, expected to conclude by the end of the year. These pacts are aimed at lowering trade barriers, enhancing competitiveness, and securing new opportunities for Indian exporters.

🔹 Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes Fueling Manufacturing

To make India a global manufacturing hub, the government has implemented PLI schemes across 14 key sectors, including:

  • Electronics & IT Hardware

  • Pharmaceuticals & Bulk Drugs

  • Automobiles & Auto Components

  • White Goods

  • Solar PV Modules

  • Telecom & Networking Products

These schemes incentivize domestic production, attract FDI, generate employment, and enhance exports. For instance:

  • Mobile Manufacturing: India’s mobile exports have surged from ₹1,500 crore in 2014-15 to over ₹2 lakh crore in 2024-25, making India the second-largest mobile manufacturer globally.

  • Medical Devices: 21 projects are producing 54 unique high-end devices such as MRI, CT-Scans, Heart Valves, and Stents.

  • Pharmaceuticals: Cumulative sales of ₹2.66 lakh crore were achieved in the first three years, including exports worth ₹1.70 lakh crore, transforming India from a net importer to a net exporter of bulk drugs.

🔹 Logistics Transformation: NLP & PM Gati Shakti

To reduce logistics costs and improve trade efficiency, landmark reforms have been introduced:

  • National Logistics Policy (NLP)

  • PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan

These initiatives focus on seamless multimodal connectivity, faster movement of goods, and integration of technology-driven solutions such as the Logistics Data Bank. Additionally, the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) is creating globally competitive industrial hubs linked to both domestic and global markets.

🔹 Districts as Export Hubs (DEH) & E-Commerce Export Hubs (ECEHs)

At the grassroots level, the Districts as Export Hubs (DEH) initiative is enabling local businesses, artisans, and SMEs to integrate into global trade. So far, District Export Action Plans for 590 districts have been prepared, identifying bottlenecks and recommending corrective measures.

Similarly, E-Commerce Export Hubs (ECEHs) are being established to promote cross-border online trade. These hubs will provide:

  • Customs clearance

  • Packaging & warehousing

  • Quality certification

  • Streamlined regulatory processes

Five ECEH pilot projects have already been proposed.

🔹 Impact on Economy

The combined impact of these initiatives has been transformative:

  • Significant reduction in import dependency

  • Surge in exports across electronics, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices

  • Increased domestic job creation and investment inflows

  • Positioning India as a critical player in global supply chains

With FTAs opening new markets, PLI schemes energizing domestic industries, and logistics reforms lowering trade costs, India is steadily advancing towards its vision of becoming a global export hub.
