Chandigarh: In a landmark move reinforcing India’s position as a global electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing hub, SWITCH Mobility, the electric bus and light commercial vehicle arm of the Hinduja Group, flagged off the first batch of 10 electric buses to the Republic of Mauritius. These buses, part of a 100-unit order, are a special gift from the people and Government of India to the people and Government of Mauritius under a Government-to-Government agreement.
The ceremonial flag-off was graced by Dr the Hon Navinchandra Ramgoolam, GCSK, FRCP, Prime Minister of Mauritius; Hon Osman Mahomed, Minister of Land Transport; Shri Anurag Srivastava, High Commissioner of India to Mauritius; and other eminent dignitaries from both nations. The event underscored the strategic importance of the deployment in strengthening bilateral ties and promoting sustainable transport solutions.
Manufactured at SWITCH Mobility’s state-of-the-art facility in Chennai, the SWITCH EiV12 buses are designed to embody the company’s ‘Make in India, for the World’ vision. They combine advanced global design and technology with the efficiency of Indian manufacturing expertise. The buses will serve the National Transport Corporation (NTC), Mauritius’ state-owned public transport operator, enhancing the nation’s green mobility infrastructure.
The SWITCH EiV12 platform offers spacious seating for up to 45 passengers, with features optimized for modern urban commutes. Built for durability, safety, and passenger comfort, these all-electric buses meet global performance benchmarks. Delivered through an open tender conducted by Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) in India, they represent a significant leap in India’s EV export footprint.
Speaking on the occasion, RG Venkataraman, Chief Commercial Officer, SWITCH Mobility, said:
“We are proud to deliver our SWITCH EiV12 electric buses to Mauritius, a key milestone that brings our ‘Make in India, for the World’ vision to life. These buses integrate advanced global technology with the strength of Indian manufacturing, supporting Mauritius’ vision for a sustainable and healthier future. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to clean mobility, urban transport excellence, and environmental preservation.”
Designed for short- and medium-distance urban travel, the SWITCH EiV12 features a lightweight, streamlined body for smoother rides in bustling city environments. Its dual-gun rear-end charging interface ensures rapid recharging while optimizing depot space. The buses are powered by SWITCH iON, a proprietary telematics system enabling real-time health monitoring, Integrated Transport Management Systems (ITMS), and efficient fleet operations. Safety is prioritized with an advanced Fire Detection and Suppression System (FDSS) and floor-mounted LFP batteries that ensure vehicle stability with a low center of gravity.
These buses have been engineered specifically to meet the operational demands of Mauritius’ urban transit network, focusing on sustainability, reliability, and cost efficiency. This delivery marks a crucial step in SWITCH Mobility’s global expansion journey, showcasing India’s manufacturing excellence and its growing role in delivering world-class sustainable transportation solutions.
With this deployment, India not only strengthens its diplomatic relationship with Mauritius but also sets a precedent for future Government-to-Government collaborations in the clean mobility space — paving the way for a greener future.
