Seamless QR-Based Digital Payments Now Accessible to International Visitors Without an Indian Bank Account
New Delhi: In a major push to enhance digital payment accessibility for international visitors, Smart Payment Solutions, a Reserve Bank of India (RBI)-regulated fintech company, has launched ‘Mony’, a UPI-based mobile app designed for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and foreign tourists visiting India. The app is built under the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) One World initiative spearheaded by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
With India’s tourism sector witnessing a rapid rebound and international footfall expected to rise sharply by 2030, Mony is positioned to solve a long-standing problem: enabling cashless, QR-based payments for visitors without requiring an Indian bank account.
What is Mony?
Mony is a mobile UPI application that enables foreign nationals and NRIs to make digital payments in India via UPI—India’s massively popular, interoperable real-time payment infrastructure. It has been developed under the Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) framework, allowing wallet-based top-ups for spending within the country.
Key Features of Mony:
-
UPI-based QR code payments accepted by local merchants, vendors, and large retail outlets across India.
-
No need for an Indian bank account.
-
Easy digital onboarding, including KYC appointment bookings via the app.
-
KYC verification at major Indian airports and cities, supported by trained company personnel.
-
AI-powered travel features, such as location-based recommendations, making it not just a payment app but also a travel companion.
How It Works
To start using Mony, international users can:
-
Download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
-
Book a Know-Your-Customer (KYC) appointment through the app.
-
Complete KYC onboarding with the help of Smart Payment Solutions’ representatives available at major international airports and city hubs.
-
Load funds into their Mony wallet using permitted international payment methods.
-
Scan and pay using UPI QR codes anywhere in India.
This simplified onboarding process makes it easier for users to adopt India’s QR-based digital economy, which has seen explosive growth over the past few years.
A Boost to India’s Tourism and Digital Inclusion Goals
India welcomed 9.52 million international tourists in 2023, generating approximately US$28 billion in tourism receipts. As the country eyes 30 million arrivals by 2030, the demand for digitally enabled, cashless experiences is set to grow. With digital payments becoming ubiquitous across urban and rural India alike, Mony aims to fill a crucial gap by enabling secure, seamless UPI payments for visitors from abroad.
“Mony solves a significant pain point for international visitors by offering a simple, secure way to transact using UPI,” said Praveen Kumar Dhabhai, Director of Smart Payment Solutions.
He added that international travelers often face hurdles in making small local purchases, such as at food stalls, taxis, or small stores that only accept UPI or local cards. Mony is designed to solve these last-mile problems through intuitive design and widespread acceptance.
NPCI Backs the Rollout
The app launch aligns with NPCI’s UPI One World initiative, which envisions the global expansion of India’s UPI ecosystem to serve foreign nationals and cross-border travelers.
“We are happy to partner with Mony to offer UPI payments for foreign nationals visiting India,” said an NPCI spokesperson.
“UPI One World makes loading funds and receiving refunds seamless for users, encouraging more tourists to embrace India’s digital infrastructure,” the spokesperson added.
A Growing UPI Ecosystem
The launch of Mony comes at a time when UPI is scaling globally and becoming the backbone of India’s digital financial ecosystem. In June 2025 alone, UPI recorded over 14 billion transactions, with a total transaction value exceeding ₹20.4 lakh crore.
With its integration into cross-border payments and now tourism, UPI is fast becoming one of India’s most influential tech exports.
Policy and Regulatory Support
The app has been developed under India’s Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) regulations, which allow fintech firms to offer semi-closed wallets to specific categories of users. The RBI has recently been encouraging innovations that facilitate cross-border digital transactions, especially for tourism and trade.
Mony represents a strategic extension of India’s fintech ambitions, providing a tangible interface for foreigners to experience the convenience, speed, and reach of the country’s digital payments ecosystem.
Conclusion: Mony as a Gateway to Cashless India
Mony isn’t just a fintech product; it’s an enabler of India’s aspirations to become a digitally inclusive and visitor-friendly economy. With an easy-to-use interface, airport-based KYC support, and integration with one of the world’s most advanced payment networks, Mony is expected to transform the way tourists experience India—from cash-based transactions to UPI-powered convenience.
As global travel to India continues to rise, such tools will play a key role in enhancing the tourist experience, ensuring ease of access, and positioning India as a digital-first destination for the world.
