Chandigarh – In a landmark initiative towards sustainable industrial logistics, Hindustan Zinc Limited (BSE: 500188, NSE: HINDZINC), India’s largest and the world’s only integrated zinc producer, has significantly expanded its green logistics strategy. In partnership with GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd., an Essar venture, the company is rolling out one of the country’s most ambitious electric and LNG-powered transport transitions.

The agreement marks the deployment of 100 advanced electric trucks, supported by the country’s first commercial battery-swapping infrastructure for concentrate transport, and the addition of 100 LNG-powered long-haul trucks, doubling the existing fleet to 200. Together, this move is set to significantly cut down carbon emissions across the company’s logistics chain and sets a new benchmark for the mining and metals industry in India.

₹400 Crore Investment to Fuel Green Transition

GreenLine Mobility has committed an investment of ₹400 crore to bring this vision to life. This includes not only the addition of electric trucks but also the development of three high-capacity battery swapping stations to enable round-the-clock EV operations between Hindustan Zinc’s mines and smelters.

These initiatives are central to Hindustan Zinc’s vision to achieve Net Zero emissions across its supply chain, aligning with its Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 and India’s broader push towards green growth.

A Shift in Long-Haul Transport: Doubling the LNG Fleet

With 100 new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trucks joining its fleet, Hindustan Zinc has effectively doubled its LNG-powered long-haul transportation capability. This fleet will be used primarily for transporting finished goods to markets across the country.

Compared to conventional diesel-powered trucks, LNG trucks emit significantly lower greenhouse gases. This transition is projected to help reduce approximately 236 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions per month, translating to the equivalent of planting around 12,000 trees. On an annual basis, Hindustan Zinc expects this initiative to contribute to a reduction of approximately 1,50,000 tonnes of Scope 3 emissions.

Leadership Speaks

Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to sustainability:

“At Hindustan Zinc, we are unwavering in our commitment to pioneering sustainable practices and believe the future of manufacturing is green. This large-scale deployment of EVs and LNG trucks, a bold step in our journey to net zero, solidifies our dedication to driving meaningful impact through innovative green logistics solutions and strategic partnerships, shaping a cleaner, more sustainable supply chain.”

Anand Mimani, CEO of GreenLine Mobility, highlighted the urgency of clean logistics:

“Clean transport isn’t a future option, it’s today’s responsibility. This deployment with Hindustan Zinc powerfully reflects our shared urgency to decarbonize logistics at scale, setting a scalable model for industrial decarbonization across sectors. With our LNG and EV fleet, manufactured by Blue Energy Motors, we’re bringing together innovation, sustainability, and real-world impact in a way that’s practical and powerful for industry.”

Sustainability as Strategy

Hindustan Zinc’s sustainability track record speaks volumes. Recognized by S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024 as the world’s most sustainable company in the metals and mining sector, the company has recently announced its 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These targets include:

  • 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions

  • 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions
    (based on the 2020 baseline)

Other key focus areas of the company’s SDGs include climate change mitigation, water stewardship, biodiversity conservation, responsible sourcing, circular economy initiatives, workforce diversity, and measurable social impact.

GreenLine’s Growing Footprint

GreenLine Mobility is fast becoming a critical player in India’s green logistics ecosystem. With a current fleet of over 650 LNG trucks operating across diverse sectors including FMCG, e-commerce, cement, oil & gas, and metals, the company has already covered over 50 million kilometres, avoiding more than 14,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions to date.

Looking ahead, GreenLine plans to scale its fleet to over 10,000 clean trucks, backed by a robust infrastructure of:

  • 100 LNG refuelling stations

  • EV charging hubs

  • Battery swapping facilities

These efforts aim to cut carbon emissions by up to 1 million tonnes annually, positioning GreenLine as a key enabler of India’s industrial decarbonization roadmap.

As the country advances towards its 2070 net zero target, initiatives like the one spearheaded by Hindustan Zinc and GreenLine Mobility provide a replicable model for other industries looking to decarbonize logistics. Through technology, investment, and bold leadership, the two companies are driving a greener, more efficient, and more responsible future.
