Jalandhar:
With the Monsoon Session of Parliament set to commence on July 21, Rajya Sabha Member and Founder Chancellor of Lovely Professional University (LPU), Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, is gearing up to spotlight several key national issues. His agenda includes pushing for urgent reforms in aviation safety, tax law simplification, ease of doing business, and sports governance, all of which he believes are essential for improving citizens’ lives and ensuring better policy accountability.
Aviation Safety in Focus Post Ahmedabad Crash
Dr. Mittal is expected to make a strong intervention in the Upper House demanding a parliamentary debate on aviation safety standards, following the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, which claimed 260 lives—one of the deadliest air disasters in recent Indian aviation history.
Quoting from recent audits and expert findings that flagged systemic gaps within the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Dr. Mittal will urge the government to outline a concrete roadmap to reform aviation oversight mechanisms. “The Ahmedabad crash wasn’t just an accident—it was a systemic failure,” Dr. Mittal said. “With India’s aviation sector witnessing exponential growth, we must ensure our regulatory frameworks evolve accordingly. The safety of our citizens must never be compromised.”
Push for Tax Reforms and Better Business Climate
Dr. Mittal will also extend strong support to two major legislative proposals that are expected to be tabled during the session—the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill and the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill. These bills are aimed at:
Simplifying tax structures
Decriminalizing minor regulatory offenses
Reducing compliance burden on small businesses and entrepreneurs
Boosting the ease of doing business, especially for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs)
“The tax system should not be a source of fear or frustration. We need policies that are citizen-friendly and pro-business. These reforms can help unlock India’s entrepreneurial potential,” Dr. Mittal emphasized.
Advocacy for Heritage, Sports and Cultural Legislation
Apart from economic and safety-related issues, Dr. Mittal has outlined a broader legislative agenda:
✅ Geoheritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance) Bill, 2025
Dr. Mittal is expected to make a special appeal for the inclusion and preservation of Punjab’s geological heritage sites, ensuring they receive due protection, documentation, and funding under the new framework proposed in this bill.
✅ National Sports Governance Bill
This bill seeks to bring transparency, accountability, and modern governance practices into India’s sports ecosystem by addressing:
Over-centralization of power in sports bodies
Lack of athlete representation in federations
Unregulated finances and opaque selection procedures
✅ Anti-Doping Bill
Dr. Mittal supports legislation that would align India’s anti-doping protocols with international standards set by WADA, and provide a statutory framework for the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), with an aim to:
Prevent substance abuse in sports
Ensure fair play
Strengthen India’s image on the global sporting stage
A Commitment to Pro-People Policy Making
In a statement ahead of the session, Dr. Mittal reiterated his core philosophy of “citizen-first” lawmaking:
“From air travel safety to tax reforms and sports integrity—every policy decision must ease the burden on the common man, ensure justice, and secure national interest. I will continue to be a voice for the voiceless in Parliament.”
Dr. Mittal, who has previously raised issues related to higher education access, mental health, road safety, and regional development, remains among the more active and reform-driven parliamentarians from Punjab and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
