20 spotted deer introduced as part of a key ecological restoration effort in Kutch

Kutch (Gujarat): In a landmark move to enhance wildlife diversity and ecological balance, the Gujarat Forest Department, in collaboration with Vantara—a leading wildlife conservation initiative founded by Anant Ambani—has successfully introduced 20 spotted deer (chital) into a specially protected 70-hectare zone of the Banni Grasslands, one of Asia’s largest and most ecologically significant grassland ecosystems.

This collaborative effort marks a critical milestone in India’s grassland restoration movement, reflecting a synergistic approach between government and private conservation bodies to safeguard endangered and native species.

🦌 A Carefully Planned Introduction

The 20 spotted deer were translocated from Vantara’s ex-situ conservation facility in Jamnagar, operated under the Greens Zoological, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre. The animals were transported in specialised wildlife ambulances to ensure stress-free and safe relocation.

The release was conducted under the direct supervision of forest officials, while Vantara provided technical, logistical, and veterinary support in full alignment with national conservation and translocation protocols.

🔍 Scientific Approach to Conservation

Before the introduction, a joint field assessment was undertaken by wildlife biologists, veterinarians, and forest officials from both Vantara and the Gujarat Forest Department. This scientific survey aimed to:

  • Evaluate habitat suitability

  • Identify ecological restoration measures

  • Ensure long-term survival potential for the species

The initiative aligns with Gujarat’s broader wildlife conservation roadmap, which seeks to restore native herbivore populations and improve predator-prey balance in semi-arid grassland zones.

“This initiative reflects a collaborative approach to conservation, where scientific expertise and logistical support are combined to strengthen biodiversity in the Banni Grasslands,” said Dr. Brij Kishor Gupta, Director of the Greens Zoological, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre. “Our focus remains on achieving meaningful conservation outcomes through partnerships grounded in shared objectives.”

🌾 The Banni Grasslands: A Unique Ecosystem

Spanning 2,618 sq. km, the Banni Grasslands in Gujarat’s Kutch district are among Asia’s largest natural grasslands. The region is vital for supporting a wide range of fauna and flora and serves as a critical habitat for rare and endangered species.

Biodiversity surveys have identified:

  • 12 species of mammals

  • 6 carnivores (including Indian wolf, golden jackal, striped hyena, and Indian fox)

  • 2 major herbivores (including nilgai and Indian gazelle)

However, habitat degradation, invasive plant species, and grazing pressures have led to biodiversity loss in recent decades, necessitating focused restoration and rewilding efforts.

The spotted deer reintroduction is part of a larger strategy to:

  • Rebuild trophic linkages

  • Rejuvenate native grass cover

  • Support the revival of natural ecological functions

🤝 Vantara’s Role in India’s Conservation Landscape

Vantara, established by Anant Ambani, has emerged as a pivotal player in India’s conservation movement, especially through:

  • Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation

  • Veterinary and scientific expertise

  • Technical infrastructure for translocation and breeding programs

Through its Greens Zoological, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Jamnagar, Vantara houses and cares for numerous rescued and endangered species, and actively collaborates with state agencies to contribute to national biodiversity efforts.

In the Banni project, Vantara has:

  • Offered technical leadership in deer relocation

  • Provided veterinary monitoring support

  • Contributed to pre-release habitat evaluation and planning

🌱 Looking Ahead: A Model for Public-Private Conservation

The introduction of spotted deer into the Banni Grasslands is more than a symbolic step—it reflects an action-oriented conservation model, combining the strengths of public governance and private scientific investment.

The Gujarat Forest Department continues to lead habitat restoration efforts in Banni by:

  • Controlling invasive species like Prosopis juliflora

  • Promoting native grass restoration

  • Strengthening community engagement and eco-tourism

Together, Vantara and the Forest Department aim to:

  • Enhance species richness

  • Stabilize ecological functions

  • Promote long-term sustainability of India’s grasslands
