New Delhi: The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, announced that the Commerce Ministry will soon release new guidelines to support first-time exporters and promote Indian products under the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) initiative in newer international markets. The announcement was made during the National ODOP Awards 2024 ceremony held in the national capital.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Goyal emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming every Indian district into an export hub, powered by unique local products and a spirit of entrepreneurship. He said the Ministry will work closely with districts to identify new markets, nurture new products, and support first-time exporters, thereby integrating more regions into India’s export ecosystem.
“India today is like an oasis in a turbulent world. Our growth is being powered by 773 districts, our diversity, and the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. We are the fastest-growing large economy, and we’re on track to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027,” said Shri Goyal.
🧵 ODOP: A Model Rooted in Legacy and Global Potential
The Minister lauded the ODOP initiative as a uniquely Indian model that bridges the country’s rich cultural legacy with global trade potential. He highlighted iconic products like Wayanad’s coffee, Ratnagiri’s mangoes, and Pulwama’s saffron, which showcase the variety and excellence of India’s districts.
“Each district carries a legacy, and through ODOP, we are taking that legacy global,” Goyal remarked. “Sometimes, two products from a single district may need recognition. That flexibility exists, because local is now going global.”
📊 States Making Strides: Bihar Achieves 100% ODOP Coverage
Shri Goyal specifically commended Bihar, where all 38 districts now have 100% product coverage under ODOP. The state has integrated ODOP into its Industrial Investment Promotion Policy and has been classified under Category A for its efforts.
Across India, 64 of 87 ODOP products are now covered under industrial policy frameworks, helping channel investments and resources into regional growth engines.
🛍️ PM Ekta Mall and Global Outreach
The Minister also announced that 27 states have been approved to establish PM Ekta Malls, multi-state retail hubs that will display ODOP products, GI-tagged items, handlooms, and handicrafts. These malls aim to boost the visibility and sales of regional products domestically and globally.
ODOP’s global footprint is already expanding:
-
ODOP Walls have been established in cities like New York, Singapore, Milan, Kuwait, Vancouver, Bahrain, and Tokyo.
-
Products are now sold in international retail outlets such as Mustafa Centre and Centre Point Mall in Singapore.
-
Over 15 Indian Missions abroad have organized roadshows, exhibitions, and cultural gifting campaigns to promote ODOP brands internationally.
💼 Strengthening Branding, Quality, and Sustainability
A key focus of the new guidelines will be on enhancing the branding, packaging, and quality standards of ODOP products. Goyal stressed the need for sustainable production practices and global-quality presentation to improve international competitiveness.
To assist districts, the Ministry has compiled a Best Practices Compendium that documents success stories from across India. It serves as a roadmap for others to replicate proven strategies in branding, capacity building, and marketing.
📚 Skilling, Innovation, and Experiential Learning
The ODOP initiative has also partnered with premier institutions such as IITs, NID, and IIMs to deliver targeted training and skilling programs for artisans, farmers, and MSMEs. These efforts aim to develop grassroots capacity and improve product value chains.
Additionally, the PM Gati Shakti – ODOP Experiential Centre at Bharat Mandapam has been launched to provide an immersive digital experience of district-specific products using AR/VR technologies, RFID, and storytelling interfaces.
