Chandigarh: In a major leadership development in India’s healthcare sector, Ujala Cygnus, one of North India’s leading hospital networks, has announced the appointment of Mr. Nitin Nag as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO). With nearly three decades of experience across healthcare and technology, Nitin is set to lead the organization’s next phase of expansion, digital transformation, and healthcare delivery innovation, especially in underserved Tier-II and Tier-III markets.

The appointment marks a significant milestone in Ujala Cygnus’ journey as it continues to deepen its impact across Northern India through affordable, accessible, and multi-specialty healthcare.

Strengthening a Mission of Inclusive Healthcare

Founded with the mission to deliver high-quality medical care to underpenetrated regions, Ujala Cygnus has grown into a healthcare force, operating a network of 26 hospitals with nearly 2,800 beds across Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Haryana.

The company’s model is built around long-term partnerships with existing hospitals using an asset-light, doctor-empowering approach, allowing for scalable growth and rapid deployment of multi-specialty services in markets historically underserved by private healthcare.

With backing from General Atlantic and the Amar Ujala Group, Ujala Cygnus is well-capitalized to continue addressing gaps in India’s tiered healthcare ecosystem, particularly where government hospitals and individual-run nursing homes dominate.

“We are thrilled to welcome Nitin to Ujala Cygnus at this defining moment in our journey,” said Dr. Shuchin Bajaj, Founder Director, Ujala Cygnus. “His experience in scaling healthcare delivery, combined with his deep operational acumen, will be pivotal in advancing our mission — to deliver high-quality, affordable care where it’s needed the most.”

A Proven Leader with Global Experience

Nitin Nag brings with him a wealth of leadership and transformation experience, having worked in India, the UK, the US, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and Malaysia. His recent tenure at Cloudnine Hospitals, where he served as Chief Operating Officer, saw him leading the pan-India chain’s national expansion, service line development, and performance improvement across underperforming units.

During his time at Manipal Ankur, a joint venture with Manipal Hospitals, he played a pivotal role in positioning the brand as a leader in fertility care in India.

His early career with Tech Mahindra and MphasiS helped hone his capabilities in strategic operations, M&A, and client engagement, experience that he has successfully translated into healthcare.

Nitin holds a degree in Computer Science Engineering from RV College of Engineering, Bangalore, a PGDBA in Marketing from SCDL, Pune, and is an alumnus of the Advanced Management Program at IIM Bangalore.

“Joining Ujala Cygnus is more than just a leadership opportunity — it’s a chance to be part of a mission that brings high-quality healthcare to communities that need it most,” said Nitin Nag. “What excites me deeply is how we are not only transforming healthcare access for patients, but also empowering a new generation of doctors.”

Redefining Healthcare for Tier-II and Tier-III India

India’s non-metro regions represent the next frontier of healthcare delivery, yet these regions face systemic issues — limited infrastructure, a shortage of specialists, and patient migration to metros. While government hospitals and small nursing homes meet primary needs, multi-specialty tertiary care remains elusive in many districts.

Ujala Cygnus’ model addresses this gap directly by offering:

  • Clinically governed hospital operations

  • A scalable doctor-led system

  • Advanced diagnostics and tertiary care services

  • Integration of digital health platforms and clinical data systems

By equipping local doctors and nurses with the tools and infrastructure to deliver world-class care, Ujala Cygnus reduces the burden on urban tertiary care centers and helps patients receive treatment closer to home.

Looking Ahead: Innovation Meets Inclusion

Under Nitin Nag’s leadership, Ujala Cygnus is expected to further integrate technology, telemedicine, and AI-driven diagnostics into its healthcare delivery model. The company is also exploring strategic partnerships, acquisitions, and specialty service lines like oncology, cardiology, and maternal care — tailored to the needs of semi-urban and rural populations.

“Together, we are creating a platform where passionate clinicians can truly thrive and make a lasting impact,” Nitin added. “This is about reimagining healthcare — not just for cities, but for Bharat.”

Conclusion: A Bold Vision for Equitable Healthcare

The appointment of Nitin Nag signals a renewed commitment from Ujala Cygnus to tackle India’s healthcare inequities head-on — not by replicating big-city hospitals, but by building resilient, doctor-led ecosystems in places where they are needed most.

With its unique operational model, seasoned leadership, and a mission-focused ethos, Ujala Cygnus is poised to become a template for accessible and scalable healthcare transformation across emerging India.
