Mohali – Celebrated Punjabi singer Sunanda Sharma, widely adored for her hit songs like Duji Vaar Pyar, Mummy Nu Pasand, and Udh Di Phiran, has taken on a powerful new role—as an environmental ambassador. On Sunday, the artist joined hands with Roundglass Foundation to plant 4,100 saplings in Nabipur village, reaffirming her commitment to sustainability and environmental restoration.

The initiative is part of Roundglass Foundation’s flagship “The Billion Tree Project” (TBTP), a mission that aims to plant 1 billion native trees across Punjab. With this gesture, Sunanda Sharma has not only showcased her dedication to the environment but also amplified the urgency of collective ecological action.
“I feel deeply about environmental issues and always look for ways to contribute to Punjab’s wellbeing,” Sharma shared during her visit to Nabipur. “It gives me immense joy to physically take part in this noble effort. Planting trees is a small but powerful step toward healing our land. I look forward to supporting this movement further in the coming years.”
A Movement Gaining Star Power
Sunanda joins a growing list of prominent personalities backing the project. Other Punjabi and Indian entertainment icons like Diljit Dosanjh, Neeru Bajwa, Babbu Mann, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Raageshwari, and Jasmin Bhasin have also lent their voices and time to support TBTP. Their participation brings crucial visibility to the cause, helping the initiative gain momentum among fans and the general public.
Since its inception, The Billion Tree Project has already made monumental progress. Over 31.9 lakh native trees have been planted across 1,635 villages in Punjab. That’s nearly 742 football fields worth of once-barren land transformed into 1,546 lush mini forests, 465 parks, and 27 fruit orchards.
A Breath of Fresh Air for Punjab
The significance of this afforestation drive is especially critical in Punjab—a state where only 3.67% of the land is forest-covered, far below the national average. Over the last five decades, rapid urbanization and intensive agriculture have dramatically reduced green cover, leading to increasing air and water pollution, climate vulnerability, and declining biodiversity.
What sets TBTP apart is its focus on native species, which are naturally adapted to the region’s climate and soil. These trees not only boast a survival rate of nearly 90%, but they also support thriving ecosystems—bringing back birds, butterflies, pollinators, and crucial microbial life. The newly formed forests help recharge groundwater, reduce soil erosion, and purify the air.
Moreover, the project contributes significantly to climate action. So far, it has sequestered approximately 37,000 tons of carbon, providing a tangible impact in the fight against global warming. Additionally, it has created close to 16,000 jobs under MGNREGA, boosting rural livelihoods and offering economic resilience to local communities.
About Roundglass Foundation
Founded with a vision of creating sustainable and scalable models for positive social change, Roundglass Foundation has been operating in Punjab since 2018. The Foundation focuses on three main pillars—environmental restoration, youth development, and women’s equity.
Through grassroots engagement and partnerships with local administrations, the foundation has touched the lives of 2.4 million people across 2,500+ villages. Its impact-driven initiatives include The Billion Tree Project, Learn Labs (an education-focused program), and Waste Management projects, all tailored to empower communities with long-term solutions.
Sunanda Sharma’s involvement brings renewed attention to the urgent need for environmental action in Punjab. Her collaboration with Roundglass Foundation serves as a powerful reminder that change begins with intention—and that celebrities can play a vital role in inspiring community-led movements.
As Sharma concluded: “We have only one earth. Let’s make sure we’re doing our part to leave it greener and healthier for generations to come.”
